Explaining Career Development Theories – How They Change With Time

]]>

The basic purpose of a career development theory is to guide about correct career choices according to the present time and also the career should be suitable for several years into the future. Change is the only constant, as it is popularly said. The world is forever evolving, so is the nature of business and career choices available. A career development theory also has to evolve accordingly.

A career development theory helps people in understanding themselves and their aspirations as well as skills and desired career path to find a suitable mix. It is well known that in American society, a career more or less defines a person and is the identity of the person. So, it is important to keep the learning process going even when one is well into the career, so that growth can continue. People who attend seminars and courses regularly or take up an apprenticeship or internship are more in touch with new career developments.

Just as business houses recognize that it is important to keep increasing their skills, similarly an individual also needs to update continuously. Slowing down on career development in this fast paced world is not an option.

It’s not enough to want change, you have to take risks. You have to be prepared and motivated enough to leave the comfort of what you know and move willingly into that very scary place… the unknown.

Yikes! That sounds ominous doesn’t it? It really isn’t all that scary but there are some very real hurdles one needs to overcome.

One of those hurdles to successfully making a habit change is the fear of taking a risk. Not the bungee jump off a cliff kind of risk… well maybe that wouldn’t hurt but actually I’m talking about  another kind of risk.

This kind of risk makes you uncomfortable in your core identity.  Like suddenly losing your go to, I’m fine here, I know this place and everything that happens here is ok if not spectacular, no surprises kind of comfort level that over the years is the mental place you have lived in. Yes, that would be stepping out of your comfort zone and staying there.

I used to think it was just me but I have since discovered there are actual studies that show when a decision is difficult, most people will go with the status quo or choose to do nothing. And you know, when I read about this it made perfect sense to me. In fact this very

Transformational Leadership Theory – By Attila The Hun – How Not To Apply It To Change Management

Transformational leadership theory is all about leadership that creates positive change in the followers whereby they take care of each other’s interests and act in the interests of the group as a whole. James MacGregor Burns first brought the concept of transformational leadership to prominence in his book Leadership [1978]:

“Essentially the leader’s task is consciousness-raising on a wide plane. The leader’s fundamental act is to induce people to be aware or conscious of what they feel – to feel their true needs so strongly, to define their values so meaningfully, that they can be moved to purposeful action.”

In this leadership style, the leader enhances the motivation, moral and performance of his follower group. So according to MacGregor – transformational leadership is all about values and meaning, and a purpose that transcends short-term goals and focuses on higher order needs.

At times of organisational change, and big step change, people do feel insecure, anxious and low in energy – so in these situations and especially in these difficult times, enthusiasm and

-Adam: How do you like our English teacher Mr. X

-Leila: Ummm, he’s ok but he bores me sometimes

-Adam: Yeah, you’re right. I hope he improves for next year.

-Leila: Are you kidding me? Teachers are teachers, they never change.

-Adam: On a second thought, yeah, I think you’re right. I often think of teachers as mobile phones; once they’re made you get stuck with them the way they are until a new generation comes out!

-Leila: I haven’t gone that far with my imagination, but yeah, your description is correct, you nailed it boy!

This conversation between Leila and Adam shows that they are of those students who believe that « Teachers are the same » and « teachers will be teachers » or even that « teachers are creepy! ». Actually, these statements are three of the most common attitudes and assumptions that many people hold and even defend. While there might be some truth in this, the fallacy and over-generalization that these assumptions carry are much more important.

Hereafter is a discussion of why and how teachers differ, the role of motivation in

Career change at 40

Going through or planning to go through a career change at 40 can be a very exciting time that puts a spring in your step and gives you renewed vigour for something new. However, it can also be a daunting and somewhat stressful time. I have had 3 career changes in my 43 years and have personally helped dozens of people during my time as a recruitment consultant.

It is the old adage that still rings true today, “Find what it is you love doing, and you’ll never work a day in your life” Going through a career change at 40 should be quite an easy process because at 40 we tend to know what it is we like and don’t like and can sometimes springboard from an existing career to some industry associated with this career. Some people of course, may want to break away altogether and pursue something completely new.

I was quite fortunate because I started off as a Tradesman (Engineer) and then left that after 5 years to become a recruitment consultant placing tradespeople into permanent and contract roles. After that I became a Training Consultant placing apprentices into the engineering world, as you can see all these roles was engineering based, so this is one way to approach a career change at 40.

Statistics show that a huge percentage of people as much as 60% do not like or enjoy
